18 -24-hour o briefcase?-
Nota d'usoIl termine corretto per indicare la ventiquattrore, nel senso di borsa portadocumenti in pelle, è “briefcase” (rigida) o “attaché case” (morbida): Ho lasciato la mia ventiquattrore in ufficio, I left my briefcase at the office (non I left my 24-hour at the office). Se invece si vuole indicare una borsa per effetti personali usata in viaggio, il termine corretto è “overnight bag”. -
19 -actually o at the moment?-
Nota d'usoNon è corretto tradurre l'avverbio italiano attualmente con “actually”, che significa “in effetti”, “in realtà”. Le espressioni appropriate sono “at the moment”, “at present”, “these days”, o semplicemente “now”: Attualmente vivo con mio fratello, at the moment I'm staying with my brother (non actually, I'm staying with my brother). -
20 -adverse o averse?-
Nota d'usoAdverse significa “sfavorevole, nocivo”: the adverse effects of drugs, gli effetti nocivi della droga; adverse comments about their behaviour, commenti sfavorevoli sul loro comportamento. Non bisogna confondere adverse con averse, che si riferisce a una forte avversione ( aversion) per qualcosa. Averse è seguito da to: He was in principle not averse to the suggestion, in teoria non era contrario al suggerimento; Public institutions are usually averse to change, le istituzioni pubbliche sono solitamente contrarie al cambiamento.
